Where Were You?

Can you believe it has been 7 years since the infamous day in history, September 11, 2001? I was thinking about that this morning on my drive to work. I was also thinking about my students and how they weren't even born 7 years ago.
Where were you on that morning? I remember my Mom always talking about things like remembering where she was when Kennedy got assassinated and other people remembering where they were when the Challenger exploded, but now I have one of those stories that I will be able to tell my students and one day my children and grandchildren.

I was in my dorm room, it was freshman year of college. I always woke up to the country music radio station and I am a snoozer so was hitting the snooze and was in and out of sleep as they were talking about what was going on. I had a 9:30 class that morning. I thought at first it was a joke because the radio announcers were always joking around... I don't remember what made me realize it wasn't a joke and I turned on the tv. It was sooo scary watching the 2nd plane crash into the tower. It felt like it was a movie. My roommate was in class and I was all alone. There was a girl on my hall from New York and she was also in my class so I went to find her. We were in shock and walked to class. I just remember lots of tears and lots of girls scared because a) we had only been in college for like 2 weeks and b) because we were all away from home. I remember calling home just to hear my mom's voice, eventhough she was nowhere near the tragedy there was just some solitude in hearing her voice.

It's amazing to me how those events have directly affected my life. I knew no one there and didn't lose any loved ones, but because of 9/11 the investment bank I used to work for had to relocate according to SEC regulations in case of another attack, the office was located in one of the buildings adjacent to the twin towers. After searching the world over, they decided upon RTP, NC. Had 9/11 never happened, they would not have moved their Global Business Center here and I wouldn't have worked for them. That to me is amazing to think about. It was so real to hear my managers tell stories of carrying people that were on the sidewalk to safety and telling stories of their friends who died in the towers.

Another thing I thought about today is how we have gone on with business as usual while some are still mourning and even more so troops are still fighting because of that day. Oh that we as a nation will not forget the God that we serve and get on our knees and beg Him for His mercy and the healing of our nation!
