A few weeks ago I invited one of my students to spend some time outside of the classroom with me. This is the little boy who has asked me to buy him from his grandmother and who stands at the gate everyday hanging on the fence as I drive away yelling, "Mommy take me with you!" I mean it makes me feel like a negligent mother and breaks your heart everytime!
He was counting down the days til he got to come spend the night and see Miss Grant's house.
We went strawberry picking first, which was so much fun. He got to pick his favorite dinner which happened to be Sesame chicken.. so we got take out Chinese and then he got to pick out his favorite breakfast food, Frosted Flakes, at the grocery store. After dinner we went to the Durham Bull's baseball game. He got sugared up on cotton candy and when we got home we had a house full of friends who got to say good night. He started the night off in my papason chair... at one point I went in to check on him and he had found my tigger stuffed animal and was snuggling with tigger... it was so precious. I moved him to the couch before I went to bed. It was such a different feeling having someone else to get ready and make sure was dressed, fed, and ready to go.
Things like this sleepover make me desire motherhood even more!
At one point he expressed to me the concern about who would take care of him when his grandmother dies. He said, "I know who can take care of me... YOU!" I looked at him and said, "Yes, I will be glad to take care of you if that ever happens!"
